INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO SATHANUR DAM

As a part of our curriculum, an Industrial Visit was organized for the students of I, II & III Year students by our Faculty member, Mr. M. Ragul, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering to Sathanur Dam.

Sathanur Dam which forms the Sathanur reservoir, one of the major dams in Tamil Nadu. It is constructed across the Thenpennai River also called as Pennaiyar River in Thandarampettaluk among Chennakesava Hills. The dam can be reached by road 30 km (19 mi) from Thiruvannamalai City. It was constructed in 1958. There is also a large crocodile farm and a fish grotto. Parks are maintained inside the dam for tourists to visit and the gardens have been used by the film industry.

The reservoir has a capacity of 7,321,000,000 cu ft (207,300,000 m3) with a full level of 119 ft (36 m). An area of 7,185 ha (17,750 acres) of land is benefited by the left bank canal and 100 ha (250 acres) of land is benefited by the right bank canal in Thandrampet and Thiruvannamalai blocks.

A set of 60 students were accompanied by 2 faculty members to the site visit. Students started from our Institution premises at morning 5.00 A.M by our college bus. They reached the site by approximately 10.00 A.M in the morning and met the Executive Engineer Mr. Muralidharan, present at the Dam and they greeted the students and faculty members.

The students were taken for the site visit guided by the Assistant Engineer Mr.Selvaraj and explained the students about the various processes and works carried out at the dam. The general purposes of the dam, the special aspects of Sathanur dam, the type and method of construction of dam were clearly explained by the Executive Engineer before they were taken to the site visit of the Dam.

Being a dam whose purpose is mainly for irrigation, the applications of the dam from the irrigation point of view were clearly explained by Mr.Selvaraj, which helped out our students to relate the theoretical knowledge gained in their curriculum with the practical scenario. This industrial visit has helped the students to gain practical knowledge about the Dam and its functionalities.

The visit was completed by 4.00 P.M in the evening. Then the students and faculty members thanked the officials for offering a chance to visit the dam and they started from the site and reached the institution by 10.00 P.M in the night.

The students also thanked the Management, The Principal Dr. R. Palson Kennedy, and Head of the Department Mr. B. Magesh, Staff co-ordinator Mr. M. Ragul, for granting the permission for Industrial visit and Staffs Mr. M. S. Gowthaman & Mr. Anbalagan for accompanying them in the visit.
